Eastern Mountain
(Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci)



Physical Description:

Adults of both sexes are similar in size. Adult height is about 3.6ft to 4.3ft at the shoulder and length is 7.1ft to 10.3ft. Females weigh around 331 to 518 lbs, while males weigh about 485 to 893 lbs. Its large size puts it as the third-largest in the Bovidae tribe of Strepsicerotini.

Both sexes have heavy spiral horns; those of the male are longer and more massive. Trophy horns range between 30” and 39”. All bongos in captivity are from the isloated Aberdare Mountains of central Kenya.



Reproduction:

Females give birth to a single calf per breeding season.
Gestation period last 285 days (9.5 months).
Sexual maturity is reached at 24 to 27 months.



Native Range Land:

The Mountain Bongo is only found in the wild in a few mountain regions of central Kenya. This bongo is classified by the IUCN Antelope Specialist Group as Critically Endangered, with fewer individuals in the wild than in captivity.
