Thompson Gazelle

(Eudorcas thomsonii)

Physical Description:

The Thomson’s gazelle is a small, slender antelope known for its speed and agility. It has a light tan to reddish-brown coat with a distinctive black stripe running along each side of its body, and a white underbelly. Both males and females have ringed, slightly curved horns, though males’ horns are typically longer and thicker.

Reproduction:

Breeding can occur year-round, though it often peaks during the rainy season when food is abundant. After a gestation period of about 5–6 months, females usually give birth to a single calf. Newborns spend their first weeks hidden in grass to avoid predators, while the mother returns periodically to nurse.

Native Range Land:

The Thomson’s gazelle is native to the grasslands and savannas of East Africa, particularly in countries such as Kenya and Tanzania. It is commonly found in open plains, where it grazes on short grasses and benefits from clear visibility to detect predators.
