Physical Description:

The Scimitar-Horned Oryx is a straight-horned antelope that stands just over 3ft at the shoulder. The males weigh 310 to 460 lbs and the females 200 - 310 lbs. The body measures 55” to 95” from the head to the base of the tail. They are sexually dimorphic with males being larger than females. Both male and female oryxes have horns, with the females' being more slender. The horns are long, thin, and symmetrical, and curve backward, they can reach 39” to 49” in both sexes.



Reproduction:

Females give birth to 1 calf per breeding season.
Gestation period last 270 days (9 months).



Native Range Land:

The Scimitar-Horned Oryx is native to Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Western Sahara. Due to major decline to the population it is bred in captivity in special reserves in Tunisia, Morocco, and Senegal, and on private exotic animal ranches in the Texas Hill Country. In 2016, a reintroduction program was launced and currently a small herd has been successfully reintroduced in Chad.
