Himalayan Tahr

(Hemitragus jemlahicus)

Physical Description:

The Himalayan tahr is a large, goat-like mammal with a sturdy build, short legs, and a thick reddish-brown to dark brown coat. Males are especially distinctive, sporting a long, shaggy mane that extends from the neck to the chest, along with curved, backward-sweeping horns. Females are smaller, lighter in color, and have shorter coats and horns.

Reproduction:

Breeding typically occurs during the winter months (November to January). After a gestation period of about 6–7 months, females usually give birth to a single kid, although twins are rare. Newborns are able to stand and move shortly after birth, which helps them survive in the rugged mountain terrain.
Gestation period last 210 days (7 months).

Native Range Land:

The Himalayan tahr is native to the steep, rocky mountain slopes of the Himalayas, primarily in countries such as Nepal, northern India, and Bhutan. They thrive at elevations between 8,000 and 16,000 feet, favoring alpine meadows, cliffs, and forested mountain regions.
